Some of my friends (you know who you are) didn't receive Christmas presents from me in 2009 because I donated the money I would have spent on their gifts to charity:water instead.
These are friends who I know would not spare a second thought about the gifts they didn't receive, and who instead would be happy to know that this money is going to help someone who can really use it.
