Many of us have no idea what it's like to be thirsty. We have plenty of water to drink -- even the water in our toilets is clean!

But many people around the world don’t have that luxury. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world.

In honor of Earth Day, Millburn students have the opportunity to participate in the water-carrying challenge. In Africa alone women spend about 40 billion hours a year walking to retrieve water. Our history classes will carry 2-5 gallon jugs of water continuously for one full class period (43 minutes). Students need to gather pledges from friends and family in order to participate in this activity on Monday, April 23rd. All of the donations will go to charitywater.org. They have an A score on Charity Watch and 100% of the donation will go towards helping people in the developing world gain access to clean water. The goal of this assignment is to give students an appreciation for their own access to water.
