I always have problems coming up with things to ask from people for my birthday, mainly for two reasons:

1. I usually buy the things I want myself.
2. I don't care for birthdays.

I want to work on #2 by making this birthday mean something.

Charity:water is a charity that provides potable water wells and education to hundreds of thousands of people in third-world countries that are among the 1 billion people on earth without access to safe drinking water.

Millions of these people get sick every year from water-borne illnesses that are entirely preventable for very little cost. Thirty thousand people will die this week alone from deadly diseases contracted from contaminated drinking water. I think that's thirty thousand too many.

This year I'm asking friends, family, and anybody else that happens upon this page to make a tax-deductible donation to this cause. If it's important enough to you to wish me a happy birthday, please consider donating whatever you're capable of to charity:water. If you're particularly generous, donate my age in dollars. I'm turning 29 so I've started off the donations with $29 myself.

My goal is to raise $250 for charity:water, 100% of which goes directly to building the wells and educating the locals in the area. The administration costs of the charity are funded entirely by private donations.
