As the most populous country in Central America, Guatemala is home to over 16 million people. This multi-cultural country has a rich Mayan heritage and diversity, with over 24 linguistic groups. Most of the people live in rural areas, although more and more are migrating to the urban centers for work.
Mountainous and lush, this tropical country is also prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions. Over half of its population lives in poverty and there is a high risk of waterborne diseases including hepatitis A, typhoid fever, and bacterial diarrhea.
