Burkina Faso is among the poorest countries in the world and is regularly ranked among the bottom ten countries in the UNDP Human Development Index.
Diarrheal diseases are widespread and kill more than 9,900 children under 5 every year here. Infant mortality rates are as high as 75.32/1,000, while the average life expectancy is only 55.12 years. Although water and sanitation are considered among top national priorities, very little investment has been made in these vital services.
