In the west we are so lucky to never think about water. We complain about the cost of bottled water and about adding more plastic to landfills, but we don't think about what life would be like if we didn't have access to water we could drink or bath cleanly with or use to wash clothes.

I didn't think much about water until I started traveling extensively in Asia. And then I began thinking about it a lot. I realized how much I took for granted about my life growing up and living in the west.

Water is everywhere in the western world. When we're thirsty, we turn a handle or push a button. When we're dirty, we twist a shower knob. When our pasta needs to be boiled or we use the bathroom, water is always nearby.

But in many developing countries, women and children walk for hours, up and down mountains, just to collect water that can make them really sick.
