All of my birthdays as a child were always about stuff. Stuff my family and friends bought for me that I am sure I really loved back then but don't remember any of which now. As I have gotten older and have tried to get away from expecting things for my birthday I have been trying to figure out what makes me happy and gives me peace. This year I had the great privilege to meet Scott Harrison and hear about charity: water first hand and I found one thing that will make me happy, help Scott meet his goal of getting 1 Billion people freshwater.

I very rarely celebrate my birthday. So starting this year, I'm giving my birthday's up for charity: water. The only gift I want from now on, is to ensure that people get one of the most basic needs, water.

I'm turning 37 years old and instead of asking for gifts, I'm asking for $37 or more from everyone I know. It's not going to me, though. All of it is going to build freshwater projects for people in developing countries. For this birthday I will match all donations upto $10000. As an added bonus, if you pledge your birthdays I will help you meet your goals (if you pledge your 20th birthday I will donate a minimum of $20).

Almost a billion people in the world are living without clean water -- but how much are they really living? Millions contract deadly diseases from contaminated water. 30,000 people will die this week alone. The lucky ones won't, but still have to walk hours each day to get dirty water for their families.

My birthday wish this year is not for more gifts I don't need; it's to give clean and safe drinking water to some of the billion people living without it. I want to make my birthday matter this year.

The best part: 100% of all donations go directly toward water projects. And about 18 months after this campaign ends, charity: water will show us where and how every dollar we raised ended up helping in the field. We'll see GPS coordinates, photos and more details about the communities we've impacted.
